Tattoo Aftercare in Hawaii

You just got a new tattoo at Monarch Tattoo Hawaii in Hauula, Oahu, and you're stoked.
Great—now comes the real work.

Whether you got a custom tattoo, traditional piece, or fine line design from our tattoo shop on the North Shore of Oahu, now comes the most important part—the healing process. Proper tattoo aftercare in Hawaii is what protects your ink, keeps your skin healthy, and ensures your tattoo looks its best for years to come.

The First 14 Days of Tattoo Healing Are Critical

The next fourteen days are essential for proper tattoo healing. This is when your skin is most vulnerable and your body is actively repairing itself. If you got tattooed at our Hauula tattoo studio on the North Shore of Oahu, follow these instructions closely for the best results.

No Ocean, Pools, or Hot Tubs (Very Important in Hawaii)

Absolutely no going in:

  • The ocean

  • Pools

  • Hot tubs

  • Saunas

Not even a quick in and out.

Living in or visiting Hawaii makes this tough, especially on the North Shore, but submerging a fresh tattoo can lead to infection, ink loss, and poor healing. Your skin has just undergone trauma and ink has been placed into the dermal layer. Your immune system is working hard to heal it—don’t interrupt that process, let it do its thing.

How to Clean Your New Tattoo Properly

Cleanliness is the most important part of tattoo aftercare.
Wash your tattoo:

  • 2–3 times per day

  • Using mild, fragrance-free soap (gentle liquid hand soap is fine)

  • With clean hands only

After washing:

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel

  • Do NOT use bath towels (they harbor bacteria)

If you were provided an aftercare ointment by your artist at Monarch Tattoo Hawaii, use it!

Tattoo Aftercare Ointment Instructions

If you were given aftercare ointment from your tattoo artist in Hauula, use it exactly as directed. Less is more—apply a thin layer. Over-moisturizing can slow healing. This helps keep your tattoo protected while your skin repairs itself.

Itching, Peeling, and Flaking Is Normal

During healing, your tattoo will:

  • Itch

  • Flake

  • Peel lightly

This is completely normal.

Do NOT:

  • Scratch it

  • Pick at it

  • Scrub it

Let your tattoo heal naturally. Picking at it can damage the final look of your artwork.

At Monarch Tattoo Hawaii, we provide every client with detailed aftercare instructions because we care about how your tattoo heals—not just how it looks on day one.
Whether you received

  • Custom tattoos

  • Traditional or Polynesian-inspired designs

  • Color tattoo

  • Fine line tattoos

Our goal is to ensure you leave with a tattoo that heals clean and stays bold.
